We are becoming less narcissistic with age
According to a study published in Psychology and Aging and conducted in 750 people from 13 to 70 years of age, the narcissus is declining with age, and a key moment for this to happen is just when we begin to access the world of work.
The narcissus was an almost irrelevant trend a few centuries ago. The feeling that one is important, that you can govern your destiny and that you are worthy of good things if you work for it is relatively recent. However, it does not seem to be greater now than at the beginning of the 20th century ... and if teenagers seem more narcissistic it is simply because they always have been.
But, while each time it is I is more important in society, it is not at the same intensity all the time.
Thus, according to the cited study, the characteristics associated with narcissism, such as being sensitive to criticism and imposing your opinion on others, decrease with time and age.
According to William Chopik, lead author of the study:
In a sense, narcissists begin to realize that being this way is not smart if they want to have significant friends or relationships.
The study authors also hope that their research on how narcissism changes from adolescence to adulthood helps parents of adolescents and the general population understand that today's adolescents are probably no more narcissistic than adolescents of previous generations. , in general terms.
